In The Demon's Head #178: The Field Of Roses
March 5, 2014
Hello everyone and welcome to another edition of In The Demon's Head. Today's post is an interesting one. I saw the picture and immediately my mind went somewhere that it doesn't go often enough in my opinion. What follows is a piece that I've entitled "The Field of Roses" I hope that you enjoy.

The Field of Roses
Every night in my dreams,
I find myself,
In the same place,
A deserted field,
Far away from anyone,
I've been coming here for months,
When I close my eyes,
Not sure how it is that I get here,
But I love it here,
The air is clean,
Or at least it was,
Until a few days ago,
I walked into the field,
And noticed with sadness,
That the roses started burning,
At first,
It was a simple burn,
But quickly,
I noticed that there was nothing simple,
About what was going on,
I notice that the fire,
Larger in the middle,
As if fueled,
And it dies down,
In the heart,
I see a body,
Now nothing but ash,
And I stare in amazement,
Quickly,
I realize that the fire engulfs another area,
And upon it's decent,
I notice more ashes,
This happens again,
And again,
And I realize,
With each fire,
They get larger,
More intense,
And angrier,
And closer,
That was the oddest part,
They continued to get closer,
Then in the fire,
I saw a face,
One with an evil smile,
And a booming laugh,
I took a step back,
And before I could think,
I ran,
As fast as I could,
As hard as I could,
Never looking back,
But I felt the heat,
At my heels,
Always almost on top of me,
Then I trip,
And the fire consumes me,
Burning flesh from my bones,
And melting me away,
I wake up screaming,
And every day it seems that a small burn appears on my arms,
Only to get a little bigger each day,
I've got a fear that whatever is in that world,
Is trying to get to this one,
And it's trying to go through me,
I see the smile in the mirrors in my home,
I hear the laughing every time I'm alone,
It's been 4 days since I've seen the field,
Energy drinks,
And Caffeine pills,
But it's not without its price,
My mind has started to play tricks on me,
And I've found myself wanting,
To start fires,
I've been playing with matches,
And tearing up roses,
The field seems to be drifting further away,
But I feel the fire licking at the back of my neck,
I smile and welcome it,
Unable to fight anymore,
The heat becomes intense,
As I hear the booming laughter,
One last time,
Afterward
This piece always had a bit of a dark feel to it. But I didn't expect it to get quite as dark as it did. I'm very happy that things turned out like they did. I hope that you guys enjoyed the piece.
