In The Demons’ Head: Always Be Willing To Learn
March 18, 2017
It’s hard to think about the fact that I’ve written probably close to 300 thousand words just for this blog since I started it back in February of 2012. In that time I’ve grown not only as a person, but as a writer. Which is why I wanted to take some time and talk about why, in any part of your life, it’s always important to keep learning, improving, and striving for better.

In 2012, I sat down and decided that I wanted to write. I had always enjoyed it, and for the most part always gotten compliments for my ability to reach into peoples’ minds and write things that seemed to connect with them on some level. If it wasn’t comments like that, it was compliments that compared me to Stephen King, or compared me to the writers of the Twilight Zone. Both very high praises that I never would have thought of myself. But in 2012 I decided I wanted to write a book, and I started this blog. However, there was a problem, I didn’t know SHIT!
That’s not an exaggeration either, I literally knew absolutely nothing about what I was doing. So I sat there trying to figure out what it was I should be doing, and which direction I should be going. I decided that I warned to started with some publications. I got a subscription to the writers’ digest magazine. From there I started to look through as much online as I could. When the time came and I did finish that first book. “More Than Memories” I still had no idea how in the hell to go about publishing it. I did some searching and found a aggregator called Smashwords, I combined those efforts with that of Amazon and away I went. I still had a hell of a problem though, where was I going to go from there?
I had absolutely no idea. I was still lost and over the next three years I basically floated and gathered up the courage to actually write a novel. Finally after writing 5 of them I released my first novel earlier this year. But before that I found myself as part of a number of groups on Facebook. I also learned there were quite a few different podcasts that were centered around writing. It was this collective group of individuals that helped me rediscover my desire to make sure that this dream became a reality.
Now it’s 2017, and I’ve got my goals for this year. This is another thing that I’ve never done in the past. I didn’t know how in the world to set goals for the year but this year, I knew that I wanted to make sure that something happened, so I needed goals. They were some serious goals, but I wanted to make sure they were goals that managed to move my career and myself forward. So what does all of this have to do with the subject title at hand? It works like this.
Every step I’ve taken in the last 5 years is pretty much tied to someone or something that I’ve learned from and now I can honestly say as I sit here that I have come so much further then I would have come from 5 years ago. Now I also have quite a bit of time to work with so that means that I am going to be able to hopefully accomplish more. However, that’s a little scary in hindsight. Because that means that I now have to be completely accountable for all of the time that I have freed up, and that means that I will have to be way more disciplined then I’ve been in the past. Guess this will be a good test run.
I’ve taken a lot of steps forward with the help of others who have been there, or have worked to get past where I’m at right now. Because of that, I want to extend an invitation. I may not be Stephen King, or James Patterson, but I feel like I could hold a decent amount of knowledge. So because of that, I want ya’ll to know you can message me anytime. Or comment on this post and I’ll make sure that I respond. If you have any questions that I might be able to answer, shoot em at me.
For now, I’m going to get to editing, and hope that I can make a significant dent in the workload because I intend to try and finish this book before the end of the month. I’m not sure if that’s possible, but I’m going to damn sure try. Until the next time you’re wanting to take a trip through the gates of hell and into the gates of hell, I’m Kyle Robinson wishing you a safe trip back to the surface.
