In The Demons’ Head: Creating a Production Calendar
June 17, 2016
Hello everyone and welcome to another edition of In The Demons’ Head. I hope that today’s edition finds you relaxing at home, off work, and ready to enjoy your weekend. That’s provided you get the weekend off. As you’ll notice, the set up for the post going forward on this blog are going to be a little different then they’ve been in the past. I’ll get to that a little more in a later post. For today though, I’d like to share with you a nice little tip that I’ve started using as of late. This thing can revolutionize how you do things.
That tip is a simple two words, Editorial Calendar.

Now before I explain how I use this calendar I want to explain what an editorial calendar is, because I’ll be honest I had no fucking clue what it was or how it worked. In short, an editorial calendar is built with the simple task of helping you keep publishing deadlines, release dates, and content straight. Now, for someone like me who doesn’t post regularly some might say that it’s not worth it. However, in the short time that I’ve used this it’s done two things. 1. Organized the shit out of my content publishing schedule, which keeps my post straight and helps me pre-plan what I’m going to write and when it will publish. 2. It’s helped me stay motived and on a deadline. Before I organized this calendar I edited about 30 pages of my book in about two and a half months. Just putting a deadline on my editing that I can actually SEE has made me bust ass to edit 50 pages in just the last three days. It’s motivated me to get my ass in gear which is something that I’ve needed to do for sure.
So then that means, how do you make the calendar?
Honestly it’s very simple. I use Google Calendars. I love how there’s an app you can download on your smart phone so you can stay up to date on what you’re doing even on the go. So here’s the steps.
1. Create new calendar.

1. Create new calendar.
You’ll fill out the details on the following page by giving it whatever name you want to give it and fill out the details. Make sure to keep it private unless you want people to see it (It’s great to share with someone if you’re working in a co-publishing relationship)
2. Add Events.
2. Add Events.
To Add an event just click on a date, and the window above pops up. Once you get the event added. You click it to edit and you can enter whatever details you’d like. You can make deadlines by changing the date range which will extend the event out as long as you’d like. (Side Note: On the iPhone app at least, if the event is longer then one day, it will count down how many days are left until the end.
3. For Blog Post add Repeat events.
3. For Blog Post add Repeat events.
So when you go to edit the event details you can name them “Blog Post: TBD” and click the repeat thing. It will bring up another menu about how often to repeat it and if you click weekly you can choose the dates, which will allow you stick to your own schedule. When you do that it looks like this:
Then you can tweak the details of each post as you need to edit them. You can even set it up to add repeats up to how many ever weeks you want.
4. Repeat as needed.
You’ll have to play with the system to figure out how to make it benefit you specifically. But it really is this easy. And unless you’re Bill Gates, or have a HUGE publishing business ahead of you (In which case, if you’re reading this… please HELP JESUS CHRIST…. Sorry lost it a bit there… Just share this if you would)
I hope that someone finds a little use out of this post and I can honestly tell you that the single best decision I’ve made when it comes to writing in the last few months, short of listening a show called the Self-Publishing Podcast, is creating an editorial calendar.
With that said even if you’re not a writer, try it it will probably help you get organized, or stay organized if you’re busy as shit. I promise you that once you start to mess with it, it will be the best decision that you’ve ever made.
Until the next time you want to take a trip through the gate s of hell and into the demons' head, I’m Kyle Robinson wishing you a safe trip back to the surface.
