In The Demon’s Head #241: Diary of a Demented Man- Where My Ideas Come From
September 14, 2015
Hello everyone and welcome to another edition of “In The Demon’s Head” if last time is any indication then I’m excited to share with you this post today. Especially seeing as this post is really the first of it’s kind. The first time that I’ve really shared with someone my process when it comes to where my ideas come from.
The lifeblood of any writer comes in two separate halves. The first half is that of the idea generation, what the idea, or topic that they want to write about vaguely is. Then, you have the execution of that idea onto paper, complete with your choice of words and arrangement of the beginning, middle, and end of particular ideas.

So let’s break this down into two halves. Let’s start with the first half of process, and formulating an idea. For me, this is one of the harder parts to put into words because I’ve constantly been a man whose found inspiration in things. I’ve seen the world in ways that most don’t. Which I suppose is the best place to start this particular post focal point.
A World Not Everyone Sees
I know how insane this is likely going to sound to someone who doesn’t see the world as I do but I figure this is the only way to really put the way I see things into words.
EVERYTHING IS A WEALTH OF IMAGES
I drive past a building and I see more then a building. I see an abandon home, I see the ghost that haunt it’s halls. I see the stories that spread across it. I see everything that building has been through, even if it’s something that isn’t particularly real or true.
Case in point was a short story that I wrote entitled “The 7th Circle Railway” which was featured in “More Than Memories” I was riding with my Wife toward Jefferson City, Missouri. I looked over and saw some abandoned railroad tracks that I hadn’t noticed before. I stared at those tracks as they stretched on for a few miles. I noticed the overgrowth and thought, what if they were haunted. I sat on that idea for about three days, writing it down in my idea journal (Which I recommend any writer process) and when I went back to it a few days later I filled in a few details. The more I thought about it the more I realized that this was a story that I wanted to tell. So it was born.
At the end of the day, every trip I take, every person I ever run into while out and about, every one of those are possibilities for stories. I see the possibility in everything and only hope that when I finally sit down to start to execute ideas, I do them justice. This brings me to the second part of this post.
The Execution of an Idea
Ideas are very fickle. They look awesome when they’re written on paper. But when you sit down to sketch out what’s going to happen within the story, sometimes it doesn’t quite unfold the way you expect it to.
The 7th Circle Railway is a good example of this. I expected the story to take a much different turn then it did. But, in my opinion that’s the mark of someone who not only enjoys the craft of writing, but enjoys the art of writing. They don’t stick their work into a pre-defined mold. Instead, they let the work evolve naturally and are able to encompass the story as it goes. That’s what I try to do every time. It doesn’t always work out, but most of the time I’m pretty good.
The point is that I haven’t really had much of a chance of something not going sideways on me, which means that I have to be on my toes. But you know the best part, that just means that I am enjoying what I do every time I sit down to write the words that I do. I hope that you guys enjoy them.
