In The Demon’s Head Extras: Editors Are Gods, With Hellish Intentions
October 4, 2015
Hello everyone, it’s been a while since I’ve written a post. Mainly because I’ve written them and put them in the can. Because of that I haven’t written a lot of stuff in the last few weeks. There are a few reasons for this, Video games, life, other things, you could pick something and it would likely be an excuse I could use. However, excuses won’t improve my craft. With that said, I’d like to share with you an experience that I had and how it’s shaped me.
Before I go on, If you’ve seen this post before it’s because you’re on my mailing list and have gotten the email with this post before it went live on the blog. I’m going to start doing that with some of the extras that I write. I figure it’s fair to allow y’all that have signed up for the mailing list to receive something and I have kind of failed at writing post specifically for ya’ll. With that said let’s move into my life changing experience.

Subject To Eyes of a different kind
So as most of you know, I’ve written three novels this year. That’s a hell of a feat for me. I’m proud of that and I expected to release them next year. In my head, I wanted to launch the writing career next year. I had fully expected those three novels to be the launching pad that lead me to at least making writing my full time job.
I was horribly mistaken.
I sent off the first book to a good friend of mine, and a man whose been around publishing for a while. He worked as an editor for some small presses so I knew that someone like him looking at my book wasn’t a bad thing. I sent him the file truly expecting that I would get it back with a few minor corrections but nothing major.
I was once again horribly mistaken.
It took about three weeks before I saw the manuscript again and in that time I wasn’t sure what would happen but I really thought that I could be on my way to getting ready to release this book to the public. When I got it back, I have to admit that some of me died.
I didn’t expect there to be such a slice into what I wrote. I really believed that I had done better then that but as you can guess, someone else saw it differently.
I have spent some of the time in the last two weeks really wondering if this was a career that I should continue to pursue but I realized that walking away would be completely asinine and stupid. That was my first novel I’d EVER written of course it wasn’t going to be great. However, the fact remains I wasn’t sure where I saw myself after that.
Then the last few days I’ve really thought about it. I realized that I got knocked off the horse, read a little bit, learn, and move on and write another story. I could tell how much better my writing had gotten in those three novels even if some of the fundamental things needed addressed.
With that said I’d like to share some changes in how I’m approaching things from this point forward.
Publishing Stardom May Have To wait
2016 may not turn out to be the lucrative year that I envisioned when I finished my first novel a few months ago. But, that’s okay. I’m going to spend the next month or so getting ready and I’m going to participate in NaNoWriMo with the intention of writing another novel in the month of November. It won’t be easy I know that but I intend for it to happen.
Plus, when I finally get a novel that I feel should see the light of day. I intend to way my options about self publishing or traditional route. There are a lot of things that kind of make me wonder but I’m still torn, I’ll cross that bridge when I get there. I hope that it will be soon but we shall see.
That doesn’t mean that my writing is going to be put on hold. I intend to try and write some short stories between now and then. I think that’s a good way to keep my eyes and writing muscles sharp. I’ll share the first of what I hope are many stories in the next couple of weeks.
All in all, though the comments were a little unexpected I think that it might have helped me for later in my career for sure and it has given me something to work on. So for that I am thankful for what he did for me.
I’m going to wrap this post. Thanks for taking a read. If you haven’t done so yet, be sure to sign up for the mailing list as I will be giving those on the list a free copy of my short stories that I make available for free. To do that click this link. If you haven’t yet be sure to click like and follow me on Facebook. Do that by clicking here. Last but not least, got a topic you want me to discuss? Send me ideas and topics by clicking here and sharing them with me via email.
Until the next time you want to take a trip through the gates of hell and into the demon’s head, I’m Kyle Robinson wishing you a safe trip back to the surface.
