In The Demons’ Head: National Novel Writing Month Recap
December 2, 2016
Hello everyone and guess what? November is behind us and for those of us who have decided to partake in NaNoWriMo I think I speak collectively when I say THANK GOD! This was my third year in a row trying the elusive goal of 50K and it was my first year actually managing to achieve the goal. The kicker is I wasn't able to finish the actual novel.

The thing about the whole process is that I'll be working at least the next couple weeks, so I wasn't technically hit the goal of finishing the novel, but I got close. That counts right?
As with anything else, you do these kinds of things to learn. Now what did I learn as part of a national novel writing month? I would love to tell you.
First off, I learned that support is everything. When you're writing like mad and you think you're going to lose your mind it's great to have a support system. That support system for me was a group on Facebook called the smarter artist. This is a group of like-minded people who want nothing more than to help you and themselves succeed. There really is nothing else like having that kind of support.
Another thing that I learned, is to make sure that you listen. I know what you're thinking, "but, Kyle you're writing, what does listening have to do with anything?" The answer is simple. There are people who came before you who have done this and made this journey. Those people are the people who you need to listen to you because they will leave you the direction you need to go.
I also learned a lot about my own desire. This last month where I spent 30 days and wrote 51,238 words showed me that I did want this goal. But, it was more than just a goal, it was a check in the win column, literally. That’s because for the first time in three years, I was able to say that I “won” National Novel Writing Month, and I joined so many people who chased that crazy ass dream.
At the end of the day, I’m still working on the novel, and I have a self imposed deadline of about two weeks. Which is why I’m going to go ahead and end this post where it sits. If this book is any indication of what’s to come int he future, I’m excited, and I do truly feel that my career is taking the steps in the direction that it needs to. With that said, I want to say thank you guys for taking the time to join me through it all.
Quick note, if you’re part of the mailing list and didn’t receive an update in November, don’t worry that’s because I fucked up and spent my time trying to write this novel. In fact, between a full-time job, and this adventure. I didn’t get a whole lot other stuff accomplished during the month of November. But it’s not over yet, I’ll keep ya’ll posted as the journey stream rolls on through the end of this year and into next year.
Hopefully, next week I can return to a regular posting schedule. I hope that you guys are enjoying what’s left of the year, and the holiday season. I can’t say thank you guys enough. Until the next time you want to take a trip through the gates of hell and into the demons’ head, I’m Kyle Robinson wishing you a safe trip back to the surface.
