In The Demons’ Head: Torn Between Writing And Playing
October 21, 2016
Writing is a habit, a hobby, and a future life goal. Video games, they are a hobby that suck at the tit of time and pull my attention away from the words that I should be putting on paper. Let’s get that part out in the open now.
You see todays’ post is about my horrible problem with procrastination, and it actually seemed to make sense given that in about a week and a half or so, we will be beginning National Novel Writing Month. A month long push to write an entire novel in 30 days. If you’re reading this and haven’t heard of it, or haven’t participated in it, let me get something to you now. It’s FUCKING hard. Like you might as well slit your throat open and bleed on the page kind of difficult.

But to be fair, writing a novel even without such a intense restraint is something that you pour your soul on. This will be my third NaNoWriMo and I haven’t won yet. Do you know why? Because about half way through I run out of energy and find myself struggling to put the words on the page. Either for one reason or another, it just finds itself completely falling apart right in the middle. Then I find myself turning to my video games, or other forms of distraction to keep me from writing. Then the next thing I know it’s December and the novel isn’t done.
That’s where distraction is bad.
However, there are time where distraction can breed not only good things, but good ideas. I couldn’t count the amount of times that I’ve been playing a game, or taking a ride on the Spyder, or something else and all of a sudden an idea hits me. Sometimes the idea is good, sometimes it isn’t. If it isn’t then I toss it to the side. Because, if it’s not something that holds my interest then why the hell would I write about it.
If used correctly, I believe that procrastination can be a powerful tool, however, all too often it’s used against those who don’t need it and they find themselves wasting so much of their life watching things pass them by as they get no closer to their dreams every day. That was the boat that I found myself in long enough and then I realized I needed to make a change, in some instances that change was to quit procreating like a bitch. So, it’s time to strap down, and get my act together, because it’s going to be an interesting road as I get things in place to hopefully launch something that I, and the people who have spent the past few years reading this blog can be proud of.
With that said though, I’m going to end this particular topic. Next week, I’m going to unveil my project for the upcoming 2016 National Novel Writing Month. Plus, I’ll be explaining why my post in the month of November will be much shorter then the ones that you are used to. All of that will be revealed next week. Until then, be sure to follow/ Friend me on Facebook, (Yes, it’s my personal page not a writer page, it’s part of something I’m trying) Follow me on Twitter, and be sure to sign up for the mailing list. Until the next time you want to take a trip through the gates of hell and into the demon’s head, I’m Kyle Robinson wishing you a safe trip back to the surface.
