In The Demon's Head #213: What Makes a Good Idea? March 8, 2015 Hello everyone, and happy Sunday. I write this post from my living room as I watch the warm up continue outside my window. I'm so damn excited that spring and summer is finally upon us, it's almost kind of sad. Before I get into the full intent of this particular post, I want to share with you what's going to be on this blog in the next few weeks. As some of you know, I'm working on my second novel, the first draft is currently in progress and I'm making good strides, my idea is that I want to finish it by next month. I for sure think that this is more than possible but I have to keep motivated and push forward. |
Before I start writing each day, I have a lot of things in my brain and would like to share them, much like I'm doing with this particular post. Because of that I may be posting a lot more here. The fact is if you like it, read it, share it, I'd appreciate it. If you think it sounds stupid, I understand that too I just wanted to let you know that there's a good chance that there will be more post coming from me in the coming weeks.
Onto the major reason I'm writing this post. Last night, or I guess early this morning I was sitting at my house and talking to a very good friend of mine. Our conversations turn toward the dark and intense side on a regular basis, but we love to have fun. Last night, was one of these conversations. He came up with an idea that as it was explained, and tweaked, became more and more concrete and amazing.
I'm not going into specifics in case I end up having the honor of working with him on it, however it is a very controversial topic that I feel would spark a lot of interest either for better or worse. Then I got to thinking about it, what makes a good idea?
Now, while I'm not an expert in this category at all, I do feel that I can spot good writing usually in any media form. That's when I realized (And I may be a bit late to the party on this entire thing) that I had a formula for determining if I wanted to write an idea going forward. I've established that the idea has to fit into a specific category.
Can this idea be translated in Book, TV, and Movie format? That's the question I'm going to use to judge if I want to write a story. Now I'm not doing this for the mainstream attention of TV or Movies, though that would be cool if something I wrote was transferred. I'm using this gauge based on entertainment appeal. If it can cross platforms like that then then the story is an entertaining type of story that could be successful with the reader if written well, at least that's my thoughts.
Honestly, as a writer I don't want to waste my time writing a story that might not appeal to people. The exception is that if I write a story for my own personal amusement or reasoning. That's happened but it's not as common as it sounds. My entire purpose at putting words on paper is that one day someone reads them and enjoys them. So far I'm slowly building up that group of people but I feel it's at a stand-still. Hopefully some of the projects I'm working on through the remainder of the year will be able to lift that vail a little. We'll see how things progress as the year goes forward.
I'm going to end this post so I can actually get to work on my novel. Thank you guys for reading. What do you think makes a good story idea? From a reader or writer perspective share your comments below or on social media. #Whatmakesagoodidea?

Until the next time you want to take a trip through the gates of hell and into the demons' head, I'm Kyle Robinson wishing you a safe trip back to the surface.
