Hello everyone and welcome to the first, full length edition of “Book It” In today’s post we’re going to look at an interesting topic, one that’s actually kind of close to my heart and that is the undefeated run of Bill Goldberg in WCW that lead to an eventual loss to Kevin Nash in some shady fashion, where Goldberg dropped the WCW Championship.
The craziest part was no matter who Goldberg would smash though he got more, and more popular with the fans. Fans would chant his name, and his catchphrase of “Who’s next?” whenever he was in the ring. This reign of dominance would eventually lead Goldberg into a world title match against Hulk Hogan. A match a lot of people were sure that Goldberg was going to lose. However, much to everyone’s surprise Goldberg managed to walk back out the winner and new World Champion. Now here’s where things get a little strange.
Goldberg’s reign ran until WCW PPV Souled Out where Goldberg had a match against Kevin Nash which Goldberg lost due to interference from Scott Hall who hit Goldberg with a taser and cost him the match. That’s in fact how WCW ended an over-year long win streak, by going down to a taser to a man with Creative Control. That was the biggest problem that WCW had in my opinion was that there were too many people who had their hands in the cookie jar. The thing is, Goldberg would have eventually needed to lose, it’s a given. Every winning streak comes to an end, but how should it have ended?
How It Should Have Happened:
WCW had a huge problem, they didn’t create stars and it was one of their biggest downfalls going into the year 2000. As I said above, WCW would have needed to end the streak eventually but I think it needed to be used to build a future main eventer. The problem as I looked over the WCW roster is that there isn’t really wasn’t any real threats to Goldberg at that time. There really wasn’t anyone, other then maybe DDP, Booker T, and Scott Stenier, that could have worked as a threat to Goldberg. WCW didn’t give anyone that chance. It’s what eventually bit them in the ass and cost WCW their business in 2000.
Next week, join us as we talk about Owen Heart and his unfortunate death. That’s next Tuesday thought.
