In The Demon’s Head #240: Review of “Got Your Six”
September 13, 2015
Hello everyone and happy Sunday. I was going to do this last week but much like I did with the Disturbed album review that I did a couple of weeks ago, I wanted to make sure that I had a chance to really listen to the brand new album from Five Finger Death Punch entitled “Got Your Six” which was released on September 4th.
The version of the album that I bought was the deluxe version which came packed with 14 brand new tracks. The number is quite impressive especially for a band whose released 3 albums in just as many years. With that said let’s start with my impressions of the album.

The version of the album that I bought was the deluxe version which came packed with 14 brand new tracks. The number is quite impressive especially for a band whose released 3 albums in just as many years. With that said let’s start with my impressions of the album.
Overall Impression
Musically, this is one of the best albums that I’ve heard the band release. The sound is very true to Five Finger while still being a very metal/ Hard Rock feel which I find to be very awesome. On the flip side to that, a majority of the songs lyrically don’t live up to the hype that I had going into the album thanks to The Wrong side of Heaven Righteous side of Hell Vol 2. The first listen through of the album really turned me off.
A majority of the songs seemed to have been crafted around their titles and not left to organically grow which it seemed to be case through the last few albums. Now, not to say that all of the songs, or even most of them are lyrically bad. But, this kind of thing doesn’t surprise me whenever you have a band that’s put out as many albums in such a short time that they have.
The weirdest thing about this album is while it does have a few weak spots. It did give me two of my favorite Five Finger songs to date. Both of which I’ll discuss in the Good section directly below.
The Good
Of the Albums 14 songs, all of them are very enjoyable. If I had to pick just a few to single out it would be “Wash it All Away” “Meet My Maker” “Hell to Pay” and “I Apologize” These four songs are songs that I’ve continually listened to on repeat. I love the sounds, the lyrics, everything about these songs works on so many levels and in my opinion are very much bright lights on the album.
There are a couple songs though, that while they don’t quite fall into that category are very much honorable mentions. Those tracks are “Question Everything” and “Digging My Own Grave” Both of these tracks have a very badass feel to them. Last but not least I have to mention the opening line to the song “Boots and Blood” mainly because it does get you fired up and he yells fuck at the top of his lungs. But there’s a reason that song didn’t fit here and I’ll explain below.
The Bad
Let’s start with the song “Question Everything” and “Boots and Blood” even though I mentioned them above there’s a reason that they are now in this section. While for the most part they are stable and decent songs, it seems that the titles are forced unnaturally in the writing of the lyrics of the songs.
Then you have songs like “No Sudden Moves” “Ain’t My Last Dance” “Your Not My Kind” and “This is My War” all of them are decent songs musically. They are fun to listen to and I enjoy most of them but they fall very flat in the lyrics department in my mind. Especially since it seems that most of the songs were written around the titles and not the other way around. They’re songs that I felt were added in a sense as filler and that kind of sucks given how amazing this band can be.
Final Verdict
A lot of these songs grew on me as I listened to them. At first I was torn, unsure if I would really like the album and if it would live up to the hype that I personally gave it. To be honest it didn’t but that doesn’t make it a bad album. Instead, it’s a metal bands next step in music and it turns out to be a rather good album if you are a fan of Five Finger Death Punch.
