In The Demon’s Head #245: Diary of a Demented Man- What I choose to write
October 12, 2015
Hello everyone, and welcome to another edition of “In The Demon’s Head” good lord, we’ve survived another end of the world scheme. I mean, a joyous end of the world celebration, (I think that’s what I was going for there? Fuck I’m not sure.) Either way, this post is coming to you live from my living room. If you’ve been keeping up with my blog then you know what’s going on with today’s post.
If you’re not, then welcome to the family and let me enlighten you. I’ve been working on this Diary of a Demented Man series and today I’m going to talk about one of my favorite subjects, how I choose what I write story wise.

With that said, let’s get started on the actual bulk of this post today.
Holy Shit An Idea!
I’ve said it a few times while writing the post for this series, writer’s jobs aren’t easy and are never done. That extends to quite possibly one of the most difficult aspects of being a writer. Deciding what project you start on next.
This can be particularly difficult if you’ve spent time writing a series of characters, (Much like I spent the first part of this year doing.) That’s lead to a void in my writing life where I’ve questioned what project I’m going to take on next.
For me though, I’ve made it a little easier. I’ve got a composition notebook that houses all of my ideas. In fact there are likely about 10 pages of just novel ideas. Not counting the different ideas I have for books in series or in a continual character thing like James Patterson did with Alex Cross.
Either way it begs the question that when you sit down to start a new project, like I’m going to do in a few weeks, what do I choose.
The answer is almost too simple, you pick the one that calls to you the most. Confused? Let me explain.
I have to have a desire to tell the story before I’ll even start working on it. Sometimes an idea I got at some point a while ago was just an idea that doesn’t seem to carry any weight now. Instead, it was an idea that came to me, I thought it would work, and I wrote it down. The fact is, not everything that I’ve come up with will see the light of day, at least I almost guarantee that it won’t. I’m okay with that.
Passion and a drawing force really pulls at you before you sit down to start another novel, or even a short story in some elements. If an idea still doesn’t call to you I wouldn’t completely pitch it. (That is unless you re-read it and go what the fuck was I thinking) which I’ve done a few times. The fact is even if an idea isn’t good now, it doesn’t mean you can’t make it good later in your career. At least that’s my mindset.
Now, before you get all in an uproar that this post turned into a bit of a self help article, please note that wasn’t my intention. If you take some advice in what I’m doing then I’m okay with that and I appreciate it but the fact is these are legitimately what goes in my thought process to pick up stories that I write.
Have you ever had a difficult time choose a story or something to write for one reason or another? I’d love to read about it in the comments section below.
My friends that will wrap up today’s post. Remember that if you haven’t done it yet be sure to sign up for my mailing list by clicking here. If you would like to connect with me on Facebook click here. Last, if you have an idea for a post or subject please share them in an email by clicking here.
Until the next time you want to take a trip through the gates of hell and into the demon’s head, I’m Kyle Robinson wishing you a safe trip back to the surface.
