In The Demons’ Head: Picking What To Release
April 28, 2017
You’ve mapped out a years worth of goals and now you’ve got yourself and asking the question, what the fuck do I do now, and how do I know what order to do them in? The answer to that isn’t as difficult as you might think, that’s because you’re an indie author. (If you’re not, and you’re reading this thanks for your interest but it’s likely that ABSOLUTELY nothing I say here will likely help you)

Hello I’m Kyle Robinson and welcome to another edition of “In The Demons’ Head” would you believe that 2017 is the first year that I’ve decided that I wanted to maintain and keep a schedule and to my absolutely surprise I’ve managed to keep the schedule pretty well up to date and on par with my own goals. But how did I decide on what I was going to release and prep for release this year. The answer to that stems from what I did last year. You see, I wrote my next novel to be released later this year, last year during National Novel Writing Month. I knew that I’d likely be able to create/edit/ and get the book ready for release this year and thus far I’ve managed to stay on track for the most part with that.
So in short you need to release what you have either already available, or almost available. Because once you’re aware of that, you’ll be able to determine a lot better what order you’re going to release things in. You see, I decided that this year I was going to release 7 new things, 3 novellas, 2 collections, 2 novellas (One of which will be a free mail sign up) Either way that’s a heavy bar to hold up to but I know where I was at when I started the year and thus am continuing to build on that.
Next, you’ve got to make sure that you’ve got the time to invest. If you don’t, then you’re going to have a problem. This was an issue that I had the first couple of months this year. However, I lucked out and managed to get into a job that afforded me 4 days off a week and because of that I’m trying to make sure that I utilize them to the best of my ability, and because of this new amount of time, I know that there should be a lot more that I can accomplish this year. So, should things continue I’ll know where I stand at the start of next year and hopefully find myself building on the progress I’m already making.
Last, you have to know what your willing to spend the time doing. For me, this has become a part time job where my four days off I’m in the office doing things almost every day. Except today, today I did yard work which is why I’m writing this blog post at 1:30 in the morning. However, you have to know what’s important to you. Obviously if you have kids, you’re not going to make as much progress on your days off as I can, which is going to limit what and when you are able to release things. So that also weighs in on the decision making process.
All of these factors weigh together and help you determine what your going to release as an indie author. There are some who will blow it out of the water and write 100 thousand words a month, EVEN if I get this to a full time gig, I have no idea if I’d ever be able to pull that off. Then there are others who might write 3 thousand words a month. Regardless make sure you know what you can do, and plan on that accordingly.
For now ladies and gentlemen, I hope you guys have had a good read today and hopefully some of this is useful to you, and makes you relate into what goes into creating content for a release schedule. Until the next time you want to take a trip through the gates of hell, I’m Kyle Robinson wishing you a safe trip back into the surface.
